“The S.H.O.W. Youth Summit and Step Show” was created to educate, celebrate, support and recognize our youth. This event is also designed to aid and assist in the enrollment management plan of Tougaloo College and other historically black colleges in the state of Mississippi. We will utilize campus organizations and student leaders from Jackson, Mississippi area colleges and universities to serve as volunteers with the educational workshops and seminars, which cultivates a culture of engagement and service among, middle school, high school and college students.

The workshops and seminars will energize our community’s efforts to support young people, strengthen the network of supportive youth and adults, reinforce participants’ personal commitment to their community and most importantly provide young people the skills and knowledge to create positive change. The titles of the sessions are:

STEMs To Greatness- A crash course in college readiness with a special emphasis on majors/careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

#ProductSpeaks- This session will be an in-depth look at social media etiquette and personal presentation, both online and real-time.

Turn Up The Volume- Health myths and misconceptions are frequently passed as factual. This seminar will engage participants in HIV/AIDS awareness and dispel myths about STDs and methods of contraception.

Food Matters- You are what you eat, read and see. In this workshop, food, mass media and relationships will be introduced as key determinants that shape the development of young people.

Get SMHART- The SMHART Institute from Jackson State University College of Social Work will present information on Sexual Assault Awareness. To spread the message about Sexual Assault Awareness Month, participants can view and sign the car to show their support in the fight against sexual assault.

In addition to workshops and seminars, participants will have the opportunity to visit with college/university recruiters and academic department representatives during the college fair. Performing live during “The Show” 2013 will be the War –N – Thunder drum section of Jackson State University’s “Sonic Boom” of the South.
