College Essay Workshop in Thousand Oaks, CA: Craft Your "Elevator Pitch!"

NOTE: *Workshop Full*As of 05/20/2019, the college essay workshop has reached capacity. Parent Discussions are still available, which Robert will contact you to arrange. If your student(s) were not able to reserve a workshop seat, you are encouraged to bring them to the parent discussion. Before you write the first drafts of your college essays this summer, join college counselor Robert Powers at the Thousand Oaks Teen Center to workshop your thirty-second "elevator pitch" for the University of California Personal Insight Questions (PIQs). Three kinds of tickets available! Rising Senior: You've got essays to write this summer! Bring a laptop if you have one. Grades 9-11 "Essay Preview" Seats: You want to know what's coming, and who could blame you? It's okay if you don't sit up front. Reserved Post-Workshop Parent Discussion: Your parent ticket makes sure you get one-on-one time with Robert after the workshop to discuss the student. If you're trying to sell a movie in Hollywood, you need to be able to get it across in thirty seconds or less to the executive you catch in an elevator. (So I hope you've practiced!) And if you're trying to nail a college essay, you need to craft a strong, solid thesis -- the spine of your essay-- to avoid a false start. At this no-cost "elevator pitch" workshop, you can bring your best ideas and, with the support of Robert and the group, articulate them as strong theses ready to become college essays. This workshop will be extra special because, for the first part of it, you'll get the chance to see from the eyes of the UC essay reader and evaluate some essays yourself. Your critique and the discussion that follows will help you realize how an essay's thesis can hold everything together -- or not!By the time you leave the College Essay Elevator Pitch Workshop, you will: Read, evaluate, and critique UC essay examples Discuss and consider the role of the thesis in writing a compelling personal essay Go home with at least one revised thesis and direction for writing your rough draft(s) Don't miss out on this chance to start strong on your college essays! Parents: Please purchase a "Parent Discussion" ticket so Robert can contact you to arrange a meeting time after the workshop to speak individually. Unfortunately, the event will be full and there will not be room for parents to observe the workshop in the Teen Center. Logistics: Students should bring a laptop if possible. Students would also need a laptop if they chose to attend future college essay workshops at the 2019 "Conquer Your College Essays" Summer Program. Parents and students can contact Robert directly to discuss specific circumstances.
