Polar Opposites: Scott, Amundsen, and the Race for the Pole

Friends and Neighbors of the Deschutes Canyon Area (FANs) is pleased to offer a very special program at Crooked River Ranch.  Armchair Adventurer Lawrence Howard from Portland Story Theatre will tell the story of “Polar Opposites: Amundsen, Scott, and the Race for the Pole.” Polar Opposites recounts heroic and tragic events in Antarctica one hundred years ago. Robert Falcon Scott and his four companions fought their way to the South Pole only to find the Norwegian flag flying there. Roald Amundsen, the first person to set foot on the geographic South Pole, had beaten him by five weeks.  Crushed by disappointment, utterly exhausted and short on food and fuel, Scott and his companions froze and starved to death on the return journey, just eleven miles from a huge cache of provisions and supplies. This is a tale of agony and ecstasy, of accomplishment and failure, of a glorious victory overshadowed by an even more glorious defeat. Join us in the Juniper Room at 7:00 pm on Friday, April 13, 2018, for a spell-binding evening.  Refreshments will be served before the show and during the intermission. Doors open at 6:00 pm. The ticket cost for this program is $15 for FANs members and $18 for non-members who register in advance.  Tickets are non-refundable.  If the show is not sold out, tickets can be purchased at the door for $20.  Seating is limited to 75 people. Portland Story Theater is a 501c3 non-profit organization and part of their mission is to make this art form accessible. This event is sponsored by Friends and Neighbors of the Deschutes Canyon Area (FANs), a group founded in 2011 by landowners surrounding the Deschutes Canyon-Steelhead Falls Wilderness Study Area in Central Oregon who came together over their shared love of nearby public lands.  The focus area of FANs includes many special places such as Steelhead Falls, Alder Springs, the Peninsula, Otter Bench and Scout Camp.  FANs membership forms will be available at this presentation.
