"High Tech Entrepreneurship for the 21st Century -- Can you still get rich from the Internet?"

Ron Schnell, General Manager and Managing Director of The Technical Committee (TC)*

In the late 1990s, it seemed like anyone who could write a perl script could become extraordinarily wealthy overnight. This talk will show some examples of ideas that ranged from the ridiculous to the sublime, all of which fetched huge sums of investment money, and eventually failed. You will also hear about some good ideas that survived the "crash". Mr. Schnell will speak firsthand about his experience as a founder of a startup during this time. He will discuss how he raised money, and how he eventually sold the business. He will also discuss his prior startups, and how Sylvester Stallone was involved. Finally, you will hear about the current entrepreneurial environment, and how things have changed since those crazy times---and how they haven't.

Ron Schnell started out as a kernel programmer for all of the commercial versions of the UNIX operating system. He has had 3 startups, two of which were successful for him, and one of which failed. He currently serves as the General Manager and Managing Director of The Technical Committee (TC). *The TC is the organization which was ordered to be formed by the judge in the United States vs. Microsoft Corporation antitrust case. He spends much of his days on the Microsoft campus, enforcing the Final Judgment on behalf of the U.S. Department of Justice. Mr. Schnell is a good friend of Syracuse University, and attended undergraduate and graduate school here. He is also the author of "Dunnet", a popular text adventure game that ships with every current version of UNIX.

      Refreshments will be served.
