THE SYMBOLIC QUEST: ROMANTIC LOVE & IMMORTALITY in THE FOUNTAIN

      Teresa Oster, LCSW, Jungian-Oriented Psychotherapist

      Lovers don't finally meet somewhere.

They're in each other all along.

      - Jelaluddin Rumi

Living a symbolic life offers meaning and purpose to our distracted modern existence. In The Fountain, a centuries-spanning romance about a man who wants to live forever in service to his 'Izzy'/Queen Isabella, weaves universal symbols of Mayan myth, Christian notions of paradise and immortality, esoteric alchemy and Buddhism. The hero and his queen endure dark gauntlets on their soul journeys. The film is richly laden with archetypal symbols: the Fountain of Youth, the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge, a gold ring, a flaming sword protecting the Fountain of Paradise. They are seen as glittering, golden and numinous images of the lovers' journey and their impassioned love. Through the fires of courtly and romantic love and other encounters with the numinous, the hero, through the inspiration of his queen/anima/Sophia, seeks the Fountain of Youth and Paradise. The queen, embodying soul, needs her conquistador/animus to ensure her mission. In three parallel lives, these lovers show us how romantic love can be illusory and how illusion can be transcended, through what Jung called individuation. In their modern lives as scientist Tommy and novelist Izzy, the lovers are thwarted and tested, but their entwined destinies unify them, letting us see how the path of love, relation to "the other," which is so often impossibly difficult, can still lead us to a better place in relation to ourselves, to the other within, and to what Jung called "Self." Director Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan) has said The Fountain is the film he always wanted to make. In the discussion we will look at the traps and trials of modern-day romantic love and how it can become a path of healing.
