Utah Master Naturalist Desert Explorations Course - Zion National Park & St. George area

This Desert Explorations course is in partnership with the Zion National Park Forever Project, and will take place in Zion National Park, Red Cliffs Desert Reserve, and other nearby areas.  We will meet at the Zion National Park Visitor Center on Tuesday, October 23rd, at 8:30am.  We will spend Tuesday in Zion National Park, Wednesday at Red Cliffs Desert Reserve, and Thursday in the Mojave Desert. You will be given access to the Desert Explorations online course one month before the start of this field course, and you will be required to complete the online course before attending the field course.   This is an adult education program that is open to participants 18 years of age and older.  Exceptions for teens as young as 15 may be made if a parent/guardian is also registering for the course.  Please email Mark Larese-Casanova at marklc@usu.edu if you would like to bring a child as young as 15. Course DescriptionWhile many of the upland systems in Utah, such as the Colorado Plateau, Great Basin, and Mojave Desert, vary in plant and animals communities, they all share common features- low precipitation resulting in arid or semi-arid deserts, relatively high elevation, and climatic extremes including hot summers and/or cold winters. As a result, the plants and animals of these areas possess extreme adaptations for survival.  Come join us at the confluence of the Great Basin, Mojave, and Colorado Plateau Deserts while we explore these systems and learn about how they function, the plants and animals that live there, and how they are managed.  Class size is small in order to maximize your opportunities for learning and having fun! Each Utah Master Naturalist course consists of 40 hours of instruction, with approximately 16 hours covered in the online course, and the remaining 24 hours spent outdoors in a field course.  Field course activities will include instructor-led discussions, guest presentations on relevant resource issues, small group activities, and open discussions. Due to the nature of the Deserts class, we will be walking and hiking over some uneven terrain, often in rocky environments.  While we do our best to accommodate people of all abilities, please contact Mark at marklc@usu.edu if you have any concerns. Course MaterialsAll course materials are available for download here.  It is highly recommended that you read them before the start of the course.  Course FeesThe $225 registration fee covers the cost of both the online course ($50) and the field course ($175).  There is an option to register for three (3) USU continuing education credits (CEUs) for an additional recording fee of $90 on the first day of the field course.  Students may pay tuition and register for WATS 6900 to earn three (3) USU graduate credits for each Utah Master Naturalist course.RefundsIf you are unable to join us for any reason, we can refund your registration fee if you cancel at least one week prior to the start of the course. Cancelling less than one week prior to the course results in a refund of 50% of the registration fee.  We are unable to issue any refund if a registered participant is a no-show at the start of the course.
