NEW MEXICO JAZZ FESTIVAL For more than 50 years, saxophonist Charles McPherson has been one of the most expressive and highly regarded voices in jazz. His rich musical style, rooted in the blues and bebop, has influenced and inspired generations of musicians and listeners and he has performed and/or recorded with artists ranging from Pepper Adams, Nat Adderley, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and Randy Brecker, to the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Pat Martino, Ron Carter, Lionel Hampton, and many others. Born in Joplin, Missouri, McPherson grew up in Detroit and moved to New York in 1959 where, within a year, he was performing with Charles Mingus, with whom he played until 1972. McPherson can be heard on over 70 recordings both as a leader and as a sideman, and he released his latest recording, Love Walked In, in February 2016. He remains a strong, viable force on the jazz scene today and is at the height of his powers, his playing “combining passionate feeling with intricate patterns of improvisation.” Throughout his five decades of being an integral performer of the music, McPherson remained true to his Bebop origins, while also expanding on them. Awarded an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from California State University at San Marcos in May 2015 for “his outstanding professional and creative accomplishments and his influential role in mentoring future generations of musical artists,” McPherson was also the recipient (along with drummer Albert “Tootie” Heath) of the 2016 Don Redman Jazz Heritage Award, given annually to “legends of jazz whose musicianship, humanity and dignity serve as an asset to jazz in the tradition of Don Redman, and whose work in music and education illuminate his spirit.” He also received “The Duke” Award from Soka University, recognizing his lifetime of achieving “longstanding artistic excellence, the victory of musical power and beauty fostered with the tenacity of intelligent endurance.” Joining McPherson for this concert will be Jeb Patton, piano; David Wong, bass; and Chuck McPherson, on drums.
