      Join author and educator Eric Toensmeier and friends for a hands-on and fun-filled weekend of Edible Forest Gardening (EFG) - gardens which mimic the structures and functions of natural ecosystems while producing food and other products, with an emphasis on low-maintenance perennial crops. Our learning and design exercises will be informed by our site, a permaculture-inspired homestead and plant nursery specializing in fruit and nut species for the edilble forest garden.

      We’ll dive deeply into EFGs by designing and installing our own polycultures (which plants go together where) under maturing trees and shrubs while discussing and experiencing specific plant species, useful natives, perennial vegetables, fruits and nuts, incorporating edible fungi, regenerative plant propagation, forest garden solutions for sunny and low-light conditions, micro-livestock and integrated fertility. This course offers strong theoretical underpinnings, group design experience, hand-on planting of an EFG and Eric's encyclopedic knowledge of all plants edible, perennial and useful.

      Eric Toensmeier has studied useful plants and food forests since 1990. He is the author of two books, Perennial Vegetables & Paradise Lot and co-author of Edible Forest Gardens with Dave Jacke. His books have received multiple awards. Eric’s current writing project is on perennial farming practices that fight climate change by capturing carbon. His 1/10 acre garden has over 200 useful perennial or self-seeding species including 70 with edible leaves and 36 with edible fruit. Find out more at
