Ian Joseph Somerhalder (born December 8, 1978) is an American model, actor and producer, best known for playing Boone Carlyle in the TV drama Lost and Damon Salvatore in the TV drama The Vampire Diaries. Though raised Catholic, this vampire began pursuing modeling at the age of 13, but four years later, decided that it was his destiny to become an actor.
In the summer of 2000, Somerhalder starred in the spin-off of Dawsons Creek, Young Americans, which was short-lived but well publicized nonetheless. In 2002 he starred as the bisexual Paul Denton in Roger Avery’s adaptation of Rules of Attraction , which introduced him to other names in the business, such as James Van Der Beek, Shannyn Sossamon and Jessica Biel. However, as his fans well know, Somerhalder scored his big break in 2004 as Boone on Lost.
Ian’s famous physique joined Paul Wesley and Nina Dobrev on the CW drama series, The Vampire Diaries. When the show premiered in 2009, it attracted the highest ratings of any season premiere since the network began.
Ian is known for his involvement with environmental and wildlife conservation, such as his involvement in the Deepwater Horizon oil drilling accident and the Humane Society. On his birthday in 2010, he launched the Ian Somerhalder Foundation, which aims to educate people on the importance of protecting the environment and animals. Along with his The Vampire Diaries co-stars, Candice Accola and Michael Trevino, Ian supports the “It Gets Better Project”, which makes a goal to prevent suicide among LGBT youth.
