Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears have more soul than nearly any other band playing today; both literally and figuratively. The group's seamless combination of blues, soul, and funk has led to two hit albums and acclaimed tour dates at Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits. Not since James Brown or The Blues Brothers has a band played the blues with such force and energy, receiving praise from critics around the US. With Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears' second record, Scandalous, reaching audiences far and wide, the band can be found wrapping up their 2011 tour dates throughout September and October.
The origins of Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears began when Joe Lewis became jealous of his neighbors constantly going on tour with their band. Soon, he picked up a guitar at the pawn shop he worked at and began teaching himself, learning much of what he knows know while on stage. He soon began playing with Zach Ernst, who had booked Lewis to open for Little Richard in Texas, and a full band soon followed. After opening tour dates for Spoon, Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears released their debut album, Tell 'Em What Your Name Is!, which first exposed audiences to the band's revivalist sound. The album also paved the way for the success of Scandalous in 2009, which featured a matured sound (though some of the lyrics are pretty funny) that audiences can't get enough of.
They also can't get enough of Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears' 2011 tour dates, despite the fact that there's only a handful of performances yet. The group has four shows throughout August, three of which are in Pennsylvania. They have two shows in September, including an appearance at the Black Swamp Arts Festival. Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears' final tour date in 2011 is at the DeLuna Festival on October 16, so don't miss this opportunity to catch the hottest new blues bands live!
