Theatrical, new age electronic with a classic twist. There is no one way to describe Austra, the trio of eclectic artists from Toronto with a style that combines dance, pop, synth, and psychedelic music all into one cinematic product. Their 2012 tour has the group traveling all over the world, playing shows home and abroad and enjoying themselves all the way.
Named for the Latvian goddess of light, Toronto’s Austra features singer/keyboardist Katie Stelmanis, drummer Maya Postepski, and bassist Dorian Wolf. Stelmanis is a classically trained vocalist and pianist who joined the Canadian Children’s Opera at age ten and intended to pursue a career in classical music before falling in love with punk, industrial, and electronic music. In 2008, she released the solo album Join Us, and was also a member of the band Galaxy where she first worked with Postepski. When the group disbanded, the pair joined forces with Wolf, a former member of Spiral Beach, initially calling themselves Private Life, but switched to Austra after discovering another band with that name. Their debut single, The Beat and the Pulse, arrived in early 2011, and their full-length debut, Feel It Break (mixed by Damian Taylor) arrived in May of the same year on Paper Bag Records.
In 2011 Feel It Break was nominated for a Polaris Music Prize, losing only to indie rock superstars of the year, Arcade Fire, for The Suburbs. The album received the the honor of Album of the Year from the Toronto Star
They are joined on their 2012 tour by twin backup singers Romy and Sari Lightman from Tasseomancy and Ryan Wonsiak of Ze and the Boyfriends. The group will be playing shows across Canada along with a couple stops in France and New York. Make sure you don’t miss them when they’re in your neck of the woods.
