Bio
The core of the Backstreet Boys is cousins Kevin Richardson and Brian Littrell, who both hail from Lexington, KY. The two began singing while they were children, performing in local church choirs, as well as festivals, where they sang doo wop and new jack R&B in the style of Boyz II Men. Two of the other remaining members, Howie Dorough and A.J. McLean, were natives of Orlando, FL, who met each other -- as well as transplanted New Yorker and fifth Backstreeter Nick Carter -- through auditions for local commercials, theater, and television. At one audition, the three discovered that they shared an affection for classic soul and could harmonize together. In no time, they were singing as a trio. Shortly after the trio had formed, Richardson moved to Orlando, where he became a tour guide at Disney World; at night, he concentrated on becoming a professional musician. Eventually, he met Dorough, Carter, and McLean through a co-worker, and the four decided to form a group, naming themselves after an Orlando flea market; Littrell was invited to join to make the band into a quintet.
It’s hard to believe that 15 years have passed since Backstreet Boys redefined the modern musical landscape, ushering in a chapter of pop culture that commandeered the world’s radio airwaves, broke music and concert sales records, and launched a new generation of teen idols for millions of youth. You were there: Remember the cool, silken harmonies, the passion-fueled mania that followed their every move? Perhaps you even had a BSB poster on your wall.
Performing first in July 1993, the group has charted 12 U.S. Top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, 16 UK Top 10 hits, and sold over 110 million albums worldwide, the best selling boyband of all time . Since returning to the music scene in 2005, their sound changed drastically, incorporating only live instruments (some of which they play themselves). The current four-member group consists of Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell, and A. J. McLean. Original member Kevin Richardson left the group on June 23, 2006. but the four-piece refused to rule out a possible return for the singer.
