      Dennis Kamakahi

Hawaii's greatest living songwriter, many of Dennis Kamakahi’s songs are famous Hawaiian standards. One of Hawaii's greatest living Slack Key guitar masters, his performance includes moving stories that tell the meaning of the Hawaiian language songs or the inspiration for writing it. Dennis sings and plays guitar in multiple open tunings, sometime adding a country western edge. He was honored at the age of 19, to become a member Eddie Kamae's Sons of Hawaii, replacing Slack Key guitar legend (the late) Gabby Pahinui. It was his tenure with the Sons of Hawaii (1974-1995) that developed him into one of Hawaii's most prolific Hawaiian language songwriters. His most famous songs include “Pua Hone,” “ Wahine 'Ilikea,” and “Koke'e.” A multiple Grammy & Na Hoku Hanohano winner and Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame inductee, Dennis has written over 500 songs. His newest CD, a beautiful duet recording with Stephen Englis, Waimaka Helelei (Falling Teardrop) is a moving collection of Molokai songs dedicated to the people of Kalaupapa. Dennis had early formal music training in music theory, band arranging, and composition and learned to read music as well as play by ear. He became a student of Hawaiian language under Dr. Mary Kawena Pukui, and with her guidance, launched his music career into the writing of poetic Hawaiian songs similar to the historic styles of Queen Lili'uokalani and Sam Li'a Kalainaina. He entered Leeward Community College majoring in advanced music theory and orchestration. Following college he became a member of the Sons of Hawaii. Dennis began his solo music career in 1996, releasing his first three slack key guitar CDs, produced by pianist George Winston on the Dancing Cat Records label, entitled Pua'ena (Glow Brightly), 'Ohana (Family) with son David, and then Hui Aloha (Play Together) with son David Kamakahi, George Kuo, and Martin Pahinui. He has since then released several recordings on his own label Dennis is a featured artist on 49th Grammy winning compilation CD entitled Legends of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar and the 50th Grammy winner, Treasures of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar. Dennis was one of the producer-nominees for the Grammy nominated Spirit of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar, and an artist on the 52nd Grammy winning Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar, vol 2. Dennis continues to perform in live concerts in Hawaii and abroad and currently teaches Hawaiian slack key guitar, the History of Hawaiian songs and their meaning, and songwriting workshops in both Hawaii and the U.S. Mainland. He is a featured instructor at George Kahumoku’s Annual Maui Slack Key Guitar & Ukulele Workshop and often performs at the Slack Key Show on Maui.
