      Motivational Interviewing- Lafayette

Introduction to Motivation Interviewing (6 hours) - May 22nd Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based practice used to build motivation for change and reduce resistance when engaging clients in the treatment process. While MI has commonly been applied in the field of addictions, current research supports the application of MI in health, mental health, and adult and juvenile justice settings. This workshop, designed for entry-level and intermediate clinicians, will describe the approach (the spirit and principles of MI) as well as provide participants the opportunity to practice applying the core counseling skills (OARS). Learning objectives Participants will be able to: 1. Describe the philosophy, spirit, and principles of Motivational Interviewing. 2. Identify “change talk” vs. “sustain-talk” from clients. 3. Demonstrate the application of core counseling skills to elicit change talk. Advanced Motivational Interviewing Skills: Sustain Talk to Change Talk (6 hours) - June 20th The Advanced workshop is intended for individuals who have some exposure to Motivational Interviewing and its concepts and clinical application. Use strategies to elicit and respond to change talk 3. Demonstrate the application of core counseling skills to respond to change talk. 4. Understand the difference between sustain talk and discord 5. Demonstrate improved proficiency in the use of counseling strategies to reduce sustain talk and address discord 6.
