      Wild Things Festival

Wild enough at any time of year, the Southeast Louisiana Refuges in Lacombe go particularly off-grid each October, when the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service presents the annual Wild Things festival to celebrate National Wildlife Refuge Week. More than thirty guest organizations and individuals come to share nature and conservation-themed displays, presentations and hands-on activities. The whole idea is to provide opportunities for guests to connect with nature, wildlife, and the things that make south Louisiana special, and popular activities will include live animal meet-and-greets, a hayride shuttle, canoe tours, bird-identification classes, a casting pond, youth Wildlife Art Show, pontoon and canoe tours, and fly-tying demonstrations. Throw in artisanal products, live animals, music and food, and you've got the makings of a great family event. Free. 10 am-5 pm at the Southeast Louisiana Refuges headquarters. 61389 Highway 434. (985) 882-2000.
