Why STEM? In an increasingly technically world, women continue to be underrepresented in the fields of mathematics, science, and engineering. And the gap begins early in life. While research shows no differences in STEM ability between girls and boys, a large divide in perceived competence starts as early as age five. One study found that by the spring of kindergarten, boys have a greater willingness to learn math concepts. And this perception gap is shown to be present all the way through eighth grade. If girls do not expect to succeed in math and other STEM domains as early as elementary school, it is not surprising that by college, their interests have shifted to fields in which they feel more confident. At Ijams, we are working to break down the barriers that prevent girls from developing their interest in STEM related fields. We are helping girls connect the dots between their innate desire to change the world and accomplishing that through STEM. Why STEAM? We also believe that art can play an important role as an on-ramp for STEM topics. By incorporating art into STEM learning, we can leverage girls' varied interests to increase motivation and the probability for STEM success.Incorporating art and design into STEM curriculum offers a more diverse learning opportunity and can provide greater access to STEM programming for all types of learners. Join us for the second year of the Girls STEAM Team at Ijams Nature Center. The perfect place to learn, grow and explore! This program provides a hands-on, interactive, engaging experience for girls and is designed to boost their confidence and encourage their interest in STEAM. Not only will girls engage in fun outdoor learning, but they will have the opportunity to showcase their leadership while leading programs for Ijams Nature Center visitors. By serving as nature ambassadors, girls will increase their interest in science and technology, while also building valuable public speaking and project management skills.  This program is designed for girls ages 9-13. The fee for the year is $40 for returning STEAM Team members and $50 for new members. This fee includes all 8 workshops.
