The popular and energetic team of pantsula dancers, VIA VOLCANO, take to the stage on February 18th – 20th February 2011 at the Dance Factory Newtown presenting their new showcase MZOBANE. This dynamic company based in Mogale City from the Kagiso Township on the West Rand returned only 3 months ago from touring in the UK and Amsterdam having received phenomenal attention for their unique style of Pantsula dance form.

MZOBANE is a special Pantsula dance piece as it includes the choreography of well known UK Hip Hop artist Beinji Reid who together with VIA VOLCANO choreographed the end product. Pantsula dance is described as a flat-footed African tap-and-glide style of dance. The Zulu word "Pantsula" means to "waddle like a duck or walk with protruded buttocks", which is a characteristic of the dance. Since its inception, Pantsula has evolved through the time of performing in streets with groups competing against each other to becoming a well recognised and appreciated dance form in the commercial arena around the world.
Originating during the Sophia Town era, Pantsula is an expression rather than just another dance genre. It serves as a story platform of the lives of those living in townships having endured the political and human right struggle for a better life. Pantsula mainly represented the rebellious youths in the township, but it also consisted of a certain fashion. People were proud to present Pantsula as part of their culture sending a message to other culture about freedom in general. It became the ethos of Pantsula dance that it set people free from parental dominance giving them freedom without prejudice.

For more than ten years Via Volcano have played a pivotal role in training dancers, since it was founded in 1994 by Sphiwe Mathebula and William Mbambo, and also continues to work closely with community groups and schools to spread performing arts to the community. Through this work, Via Volcano are involved in the discovery and nurturing of talent among young people in the dance industry.
