      Lymphedema After Breast or Gynecological Cancers

      Lymphedema is defined by the National Cancer Institute as a swelling of a part of the body (often the arm, leg, face or neck) caused by a buildup of lymph fluids. It can be caused by cancer or its treatment.
      Topics: Recommendations for surveillance of people at risk for developing breast cancer related lymphedema, including risk reduction practices; surgical intervention for the management of breast cancer related lymphedema; different treatment techniques e.g. pumps, exercise, acupuncture, Kinesio Taping; incidence and risk factors of lymphedema following gynecological cancers; surgical intervention to reduce the incidence of lower extremity lymphedema following gynecological cancers.
      Speaker: Cathy Varunok, MS, OTR/L CDT, has been an Occupational Therapist for 28 years. For the last 12 years she has focused on oncology rehabilitation treating upper extremity, head and neck lymphedema. She is Coordinator of Oncology Rehabilitation Services for Health Quest and a private consultant for other hospitals in the Hudson Valley. With Dana Effron, she co-founded Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation, which provides support services for people in the eight counties of the Hudson Valley living with breast cancer.
