As part of the 2015 Freeport Public Library initiative, the One Book/One Freeport program will feature “Rocket Boys” by Homer Hickam, which is the book on which the film “October Sky” (1999) was based. The library will give away 1,000 copies of the book beginning in late February. A brief introduction before each movie and a discussion will follow the film presentation, led by Dr. Ed Finch and Alan Wenzel.

“October Sky” (PG-95 min) is based on the true story of Homer Hickam, a coal miner’s son who was inspired by the launch of Sputnik 1 in 1957 and took up rocketry against his father's wishes and eventually became a NASA engineer. Though his father is mine superintendent and wants his son to his follow in his footsteps, Homer embarks on a mission to build and launch his own homemade rockets with the help of his loyal band of friends. Though their frequent mistakes nearly get them shut down, their successes inspire the whole town to believe that miracles can happen. Actor Jake Gyllenhaal stars in one of his first film roles as a young boy in “October Sky.”

The Cold War Film Series, which is co-sponsored by Highland Community College and the Stephenson County Museum, concludes April 29 with a bonus movie, “The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming.” Admission to the “Russian Are Coming …..” film is $5 per person or complimentary to those who purchased tickets for the entire film series.
