Tending the Soul in Challenging Times: A Day of Poetry and Meditation

Whether we’re struggling to maintain our balance in response to the challenges of current events, or walking thru a tangle in our personal lives, or both, we all need to find ways to nourish and sustain our souls. In this day-long workshop, we will make a clearing for stilling the turmoil. We will spend time in meditation to find a deeper quiet within, and we will spend time exploring the ways a poem can speak to us, touch us, enlighten and guide us. The morning session will include a Poetry Dive during which you will be invited to lie back and let poetry and music bathe you with words and sound. In the afternoon, we will explore ways to come into deeper conversation with a poem, allowing it to be both mirror and guide, and to bring its full medicine to our souls. In the safety of a small group, time will be given in guided meditation, group conversation and personal time for journaling. This day is not about writing poetry. We will be guided by poems written by a variety of known poets. There will be an abundance of poems to choose from or bring one you love and want to work with.                 Please bring your journal and a sack lunch. For further information contact Jessica Gazzola at 314-283-4697 or by email at: With questions about the program contact Wendy at Since earliest times, in every generation, poets have raised their voices in protest and prayer in response to the wounds of the world. Some have said it is the poets who will lead us now and bring the necessary heart wisdom, the medicine to the healing needed in our day. Poetry is the ancient language of human culture, the language of myth and hymn and story throughout history. Something in the rhythm, musicality and symbolic imagery of a poem invites us to touch into the deeper places of the heart, drops us into a more intimate space with ourselves, and there we may find the mother tongue of our souls. A poem can be medicine as well as an ally and a wisdom teacher to walk with us through tangled times. Clearing Do not try to savethe whole worldor do anything grandiose. Instead, createa clearingin the dense forestof your lifeand wait therepatiently,  until the songthat is yours alone to singfalls into your open cupped handsand you recognize and greet it.  Only then will you knowhow to give yourselfto this world,so worthy of rescue.  -Martha Postelwaite Wendy Sarno has been serving as a spiritual guide for many years.
