      Abortion: Supporting Young People

A one-day multi-agency training course for the children’s workforce which aims to help participants to better support young people around the issue of abortion.

About the training: The course aims to raise awareness and understanding of abortion, to enable professionals to support young people before and after their abortion decision.  Participants will gain a raised awareness of abortion practice, including methods, statistics, law and statutory guidance, pubic opinion and religious and cultural views on abortion and other information that will help them support young people to make an informed choice.  The training will create a supportive environment that will allow participants to explore their own values regarding the abortion decision to ensure they are giving appropriate support to young people in their care.  Information on services available to young people in Devon and beyond (including useful information on anti-abortion services) will be provided.  Participants will also be able to practice the practical skills necessary to support young people regarding their abortion decision.

The trainers are Jackie Haskins and Mandy Parry.  Jackie Haskins is a trained clinician and currently working as a second pregnancy nurse for the Bristol Central Health Clinic.   Previously she had worked extensively to set up youth sexual health clinics with Brook Outreach in Bristol, a nationally recognised initiative.  Mandy Parry is a qualified teacher and worked as a volunteer, education worker and management committee member for the National Abortion Campaign for many years.  She was a founding trustee for Education for Choice and she has also worked in Brook clinics.  More recently she worked as the sexual health training coordinator for NHS Bristol, where she developed this abortion training with Jackie Haskins.  This training received consistently excellent feedback.
