Meeting Centres are an innovative way of supporting people with mild to moderate dementia and their families through an evidence-based, person-centred approach and offer an enjoyable, flexible and adaptive programme. They are a great low-cost community based way of supporting people living with dementia and their families that have been successfully implemented in the Netherlands for over ten years. The Association of Dementia Studies at the University of Worcester is part of a research programme MEETINGDEM (www.meetingdem.eu) that is evaluating whether this approach can be implemented within the UK, Italy and Poland. As part of the research we, at the Association for Dementia Studies, have successfully planned and opened one Meeting Centre in Droitwich Spa, Worcestershire and we are planning another to open in Leominster in February 2016. Meeting Centres have already attracted a great deal of interest from different parts of the UK. We believe they could be a good practical application for Dementia Action Alliances and similar organisations who want to make a difference within their community. As part of the research project we have funding to run a small number of workshops between January and April 2016. In the workshops we cover:- - The background to Meeting Centres - history, principles and ethos including the adjusting to change approach. - How to set up an Initiative Group of interested stakeholders. - Creating an implementation plan - Who your target group is (who will attend the Meeting Centre); The programme of activities (for people with dementia, for carers; for the community). Finance (funding and sustainability); Finding a good location; Protocol and collaboration between stakeholders; Staffing and training; PR and marketing (reaching out to participants and referrers). Provisional Timing: including Lunch 10:30 Arrival and registration with refreshments 11:00 Start 15:00 Close With thanks to Brecon and Hay Dementia Supportive Community, Powys Carers and Theatr Brycheiniog for their support in hosting this workshop.
