Making the Museum - Talk: Treasures Returned from America with Juliette Wells

Building on the theme of our Making the Museum exhibition, this special talk explores how two important objects made their way into the Museum's collection. Two of the Museum's prized Jane Austen objects were contributed by American collectors. In 1949, Alberta H. Burke made a dramatic public gift of a lock of Jane's hair. In 1975, Charles Beecher Hogan presented the topaz crosses that had belonged to Jane and Cassandra. Drawing on new research, Juliette Wells will share the stories of these two American ‘Janeites’ and the very different circumstances of their donations. Juliette Wells is the Elizabeth Conolly Todd Distinguished Professor of English at Goucher College (USA). She is the author of two histories of Jane Austen’s readers: Reading Austen in America (2017) and Everybody’s Jane: Austen in the Popular Imagination (2011), both published by Bloomsbury Academic. For Penguin Classics, she created 200th-anniversary annotated editions of Austen’s novels Persuasion (2017) and Emma (2015). Excludes Museum admission.
