The history of the RIB, its development at Atlantic College, and future

Technical Lecture of the IMarEST Devon & Cornwall Joint Branch RINA/IMarEST, presented by Dr Tom Coe, Naval Architect and Research Engineer Abstract The Rigid Inflatable Boat is ubiquitous throughout the maritime world but the development of these remarkable and capable craft is unique. The RIB as we know it was conceived by students at Atlantic College in Wales under the watchful eye of their principal Sir Desmond Hoare. They were developed into highly capable seagoing rescue craft at the College and eventually caught the eye of the RNLI. Here we tell the story of the development from the first boats, the invention of several unique features and eventually to the Atlantic Class lifeboats that still bear the College name. The story continues with the restoration of the oldest RIB in the world Naomi/X-Alpha and her remarkable journey from Atlantic College to Bexhill on Sea and concludes with the future of the RIB at Atlantic College developing the Atlantic Pacific Hahn Class Lifeboat for global service. Speaker Dr Tom Coe is a Naval Architect and Research Engineer who has spent his entire professional career in and around fast boats. He is a helmsman and technical director with Atlantic Pacific International Rescue Boat Project. With an interest in human performance at sea he leads the UK MoD research programmes in human response to vibration in high speed boats and chairs the ISO Committee on Marine Seat Testing. Attendance Free and open to all members, their guests, non-members and students.  Organised by Devon & Cornwall Joint Branch RINA/IMarEST with the Nautical Institute Event contact: Daniel Gibbons
