      The Western New York Public Health Alliance and New York State Public Health Association invite you a community forum on a public health issue impacting our community.   Topic:                          “Public Health Promise or Peril? The Rise of E-cigarettes and Implications for Public Health Policy and Practice. Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, are an emerging challenge for public health. These devices are part of a growing landscape of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) that includes many different types of products, such as vape pens and e-hookahs. This presentation will provide an overview of the public health challenges of e-cigarettes in the United States, including patterns of use among youth and adults, potential harmful and beneficial impacts at the individual and population levels, advertising and marketing for these products, and public health interventions to minimize potential harms on public health.  Featured Speaker:     Brian King, PhD, MPH, Deputy Director for Research Translation, CDC Brian King, PhD, MPH, is the Deputy Director for Research Translation in the Office on Smoking and Health (OSH) within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In this capacity, he is responsible for providing scientific leadership and technical expertise related to multiple aspects of tobacco prevention and control. Dr. King joined the CDC in 2010 as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer, before which he worked as a Research Affiliate in the Division of Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York. Dr. King has worked for over a decade to provide sound scientific evidence to inform tobacco control policy and to effectively communicate this information to key stakeholders, Dr. King was a contributing author to the 50th Anniversary Surgeon General’s Report on Smoking and Health, the lead author of CDC’s 2014 update to the evidence-based state guide “Best Practices for Comprehensive Tobacco Control Programs,” and senior associate editor of the 2016 Surgeon General’s Report “E-cigarette Use Among Youth and Young adults.  Dr. King holds a PhD and MPH in Epidemiology from the State University of New York at Buffalo When:                         October 19, 2017 -  10:00AM – 12:00PM   Location:                     Holiday Valley, Sunrise Room, Ellicottville, NY            For any questions, please contact Deb Nichols at Cattaraugus County Health Department at or (716) 701-3383.
