Lichens for Beginners at Rogue River Preserve

REGISTRATION will open on April 4 at 6am. Take a walk with Steve Sheehy, a self-taught lichenologist and enthusiastic guide, at the Rogue River Preserve. During this outing, we will examine the various habitats of the Preserve to uncover the lichen diversity.  You will have a chance to look at lichens through a dissecting microscope to view some of the structures we see in the field. We will identify as many species as possible and share some interesting information about these wonderful critters that invented agriculture. Steve first became interested in lichens in 2008. He became so fascinated by them he made a second career building species lists for several places and agencies. Some include, Lava Beds National Monument for the Park Service and Wood River Wetland for BLM. Others include Abert Rim, Caledonia Woodland for Klamath Lake Land Trust and collecting data on Umbilicaria phaea var. coccinea (lipstick lichen), a rare lichen from the Klamath River Drainage. He has lead several lichen based hikes, power point talks and a few lichen classes for Siskiyou Field Institute. He just basically loves lichens and sharing lichen knowledge with others. In 2017, Southern Oregon Land Conservancy purchased this iconic 352-acre parcel along the Rogue River. For more information on the conservation of this special land go to our Heart of the Rogue webpage. Guides: Steve Sheehy Focus: Lichens Limit: 15 Meeting Location: Near Eagle Point. Exact meeting location and directions will be emailed upon registration. Difficulty: Moderately easy and flat at a slow observing pace, walking on roads, trails, and off-trail. Weed seeds and ticks may be present so long pants are advised. A portable toilet is available at the Preserve. Back to Hike Series web page.
