Get as many people to make these 3 phone calls. Call GOP contributor and war contractor General Electric Corporation at 800 386 1215 or 203 373 2211 and tell the person who answers, that you want the GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt to get Bush to end the war in Iraq and then Bush resign with Cheney and until that happens you will not buy any GE products and that you will tell your friends about this. Call GOP contributor Rite Aid Corporation at 800-325-3737 and tell the person to get the CEO to get the congress to enact HR 676 Single payer universal health care and repeal Medicare Part D and place the drug benefit in Medicare Part B covering 80% of drugs with no extra premiums, no extra deductibles, no means tests, no coverage gaps, and remove the means test for Medicare Part B and until that happens, you won't buy ANYTHING from Rite Aid Pharmacies and that you will tell your friends about this. Call GOP contributor Wendy's restaurants at 614 764-3553 and Tell the person in public relations that you want their CEO to get the congress to help enact a $10/HR MIN. WAGE into law and until this happens you will not go to a Wendy's Restaurant and that you will tell your friends about this. I set up a progressives forum for progressives and liberals only. It's unfortunate that the primary season probably won't allow the Senator a chance to visit until the general election. Thats how our election cycle is set up. I would love to see the Senator and would gladly drive from Louisville to do so. I think this visit would do much to endear the candidate to the heartland, and would be a good media event as well. I hope the Senator will consider a stop, maybe a little detour from Iowa on your way to New Hampshire.

    Congrats Columbus KY!!!!
  • kentuckywoman
Does anyone know when Sen Edwards will be coming to Columbus? I keep watching, but there are no dates I can find yet. I don't want to forget!

Friends, Please allow me to be the first to say “Congratulations!” and offer my sincerest “Thank You!” for all your hard work and support in getting presidential candidate John Edwards to visit Columbus, Kentucky!! As you may know, at 2 PM Central time today, Columbus was declared the winner in the Eventful.com online voting contest, beating out cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco and Dallas. Your hard work has not gone unnoticed. After garnering over 1800 votes, the people of Columbus, Hickman County and all of Kentucky received national media attention. (Links included at the bottom of this e-mail) More importantly, we have started a new dialogue about rural America and the everyday problems facing our small towns and communities. It’s important that in the coming days we keep this conversation going and send a clear message to our elected leaders that we will no longer sit by while the needs of rural America are ignored. This event is not about party politics, but rather about sharing ideas and proposing solutions to help restore rural America to the thriving vibrant communities we all love and know they can be. I am thrilled that former Senator John Edwards is now giving us the opportunity to host him and hear his plan for small towns like ours all across America. Thanks again for your support. The best is yet to come! I look forward to spending time together in Columbus in the very near future!! Yours, Shawn Media Links: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPOjugpbNkw http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2007/07/18/tiny-town-hopes-for-edwards-visit/

We need to get John to get one of these $10 haircuts that you have in Columbus. Invite plenty of media.... make fun of the stupid haircut controversy. Show the world that John is just a regular guy. That's what I'd do if I were his campaign manager.
  • harleymoma
I think what Shawn has sparked for Columbus is great. I grew up there and it definately is rural America. Why, we are as country as a turnip green. Seriously though, this is a great example of what word-of-mouth can do. As for the un-happy voters like John33 and people who do not believe Columbus has nearly 1700 votes, I say deal with it!!! Don't mistakenly think only Columbus residents voted, but others in surrounding communities have rallied together and voted to bring John Edwards to Columbus. Besides, my dogs are too busy playing Wii all day and have no time to vote!
  • clintonesq
Yo. John. There are more people in this area that want to see John Edwards than just those who live within the city limits of Columbus. Real people from western Kentucky, southern Illinois, south eastern Missouri, northwestern Tennessee are all within short drives of Columbus - and there are many, many rural communities like Columbus around here. If you want Ron Paul to come to your town, then start a demand for him to come to your town and good luck with it. And as far as Edwards' hair cut, what does that have to do with anything? It doesn't matter to the poor, the rural, the middle class losing their jobs and their health insurance, the often deployed troops and their families, what George Bush pays for his haircut or how big his ranch is, or whether Rudy is a millionaire or Hillary wears designer. It is what they care about that counts with me. John Edwards was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth and if he wants to get an expensive haircut then good for him.
  • John33
bull.....crap, how's the population of the town around 300 and there's a demand of almost 2000, dogs and cats don't count, and if they really want to meet some one that's intelligent, organized, honest, and that really stands for the people and the constitution you should really demand dr Ron Paul, not some guy that pays $500 dollard for a haircut, because that's smart.
  • positiveman
One thing senator. Don't try to raise any money on this trip. You will get great value out of a visit to Columbus that is more important than money if you let your hair down and be "real" and honest. a hair cut in Columbus costs less $10, including tip.
  • positiveman
Sen. Edwards can help his campaign if he plans well and comes to Columbus. His staff should check the history of the town and take a look at the demographics from the last census. He won't visit any town that is more rural than Columbus. Tell the people there why an Edwards presidency would be good for them. Tell them what you'll do for rural America.
  • clintonesq
We have one bed and breakfast in Clinton, the county seat of Hickman County. It is a converted school and by all accounts is lovely. We are eight miles from Columbus. Clinton is tiny too, population 1200 more or less, one stop light. Lots of friends of Columbus are pulling for them to get on the map with a visit from John Edwards. The presidential campaigns will go to the big cities like Columbus Ohio and LA, but the nearest cities are hours away from us- St. Louis, Louisville, Memphis. We're talkin' country when we're talkin' Hickman County!

i'm baffled by the fact that large metro areas are still trying to win this competition. we, as a progressive movement, should be collectively invested in promoting small town America's access to elected representatives!!! the issues need to be brought to the people who are most deeply effected, and often times devastated, by washington politics. these folks vote overwhelmingly against their own interests and we're never going to win in 2008 with the ego maniacal mentality exhibited in this competition! Eureka, LA, and Ann Arbor - i urge you to start thinking BIG PICTURE. this isn't just about one event. it's not just about YOU getting to meet john edwards. this is about giving non-metro areas access to information that will build power for our movement over the long haul.

What a beautiful town! Alot of people across Kentucky are voting for Columbus, and plan to come if Senator Edwards comes. We can hardly wait! We went to Lexington to see Mrs. Edwards and were VERY impressed. Also, MoveOn.org just announced that Senator Edwards just "won" the vote for the most impressive plan to address global warming climate change. So, how many B&Bs do you have around there? You might be doubling your population soon!

I would love to see John Edwards go to Columbus,KY. I have taken a picture (see to left) of one of the many views he could see if he were to go. This was taken in may07. This is what you can see from the Columbus-Belmont State Park Civil War Museum. It is said that Columbus,Ky was once in the running to become our nation Capital! If Mr. Edwards needs a place to stay there is a Bed and Breakfast in the great town of Clinton, Ky. Just about 10 miles down the road from Columbus,KY.
  • thedecider06
Thanks so much to everyone for your support! Your efforts have been incredible!! This is very exciting and I know we are going to make this happen. Please continue to tell people about the event so we can make sure to maintain our lead heading into the final days of the competition. You can email people and ask them to go to www.whynotcolumbusky.com to vote directly. Thanks again and I look forward to seeing you all at the John Edwards event in Columbus!

Columbus is a quaint little town...I moved here last October...am a transplant from Fl...but oringinally born and raised in Jersey..I too would love to see someone such as John Edwards, visit, and meet with the people who reside here....and allow us too be heard on a multitde of topics affecting us, in everyday living, and as a rural community. Big cities have always had a chance to be heard...its time for a little town to have an opportunity, and Columbus would be a good candidate.
  • jetubbs
Columbus isn't the only small town in Western Kentucky. United We Stand, baby! We all know what its like to be so far away from the metropolitan areas and know how difficult it is to create and maintain employment, quality education, and sustainability of our communities...
  • bastardchild
If you guys have a population of less than 300 how do you have over a thousand people demanding John Edwards? I'm just curious. Anybody have an answer for me?
  • kidspeak
Columbus is right in the middle of the TV catchment area of Memphis TN, St. Louis, MO, Nashville TN. And just a stone's throw from the site of the annual Fancy Farm Picnic, a big political gathering in Western Kentucky!
  • jetubbs
FANTASTIC! It'd sure be nice to see the next President in the far west KY. This is what rural America is all about...community.
  • zooty
I don't live anywhere near Kentucky, but I have lived in rural America and I LOVE the idea behind this demand. Great work getting this demand so far--I will do my part by forwarding it along to other rural voters. As a small aside, I sure hope you record the meeting as richly as possible so those of us who are using you as our proxy get a little glimpse into how things went. Great job!!!
  • laster2
Columbus is an extremely beautiful place, and would be a sign that rural America hasn't been forgotten. I still remember Bill Clinton coming through Fulton, Ky in 1996. Shaking his hand was a experience I'll always remember.
  • lberry
Columbus is a beautiful place and to have a high profile person like yourself to vitis would be great. The rural part of the country does get forgotten. When Washington talks about rural they think of the big farms in Kansas, not 'rural' like Columbus. Our needs need to be heard also.
  • lgriffin
Politicians hardly ever get to see how small town and rural Americans actually live. This would be a great experience for not only John Edwards, but for the many Democrats who live in Kentucky and are interested in the future of our country.

Description
Columbus, Kentucky is a small town in Western Kentucky that boasts a population of 229 people and is about a 50 minute drive from the closest McDonalds. Like many rural communities across the south, job loss in the face of rising healthcare costs and education costs have crippled the economy. We want to see John Edwards come to real rural America and address the problems we face and hear his plan for revitalizing small American communities like ours!
