Science After Dark at the Danville Science Center

Start every month with a unique astronomy-filled experience at the Danville Science Center every first Friday of the month from 5:30 to 9:00p.m. Members and students with college ID enjoy free admission to Science After Dark; general admission is $5.

Watch astronomy based movies and Live Sky planetarium shows in our Digital Dome Theater. Participate in special creative hands-on activities in our lobby. Take a look into the vast expanse of the solar system and beyond through our telescopes. Get a glimpse of the strange and beautiful worlds of other planets, moons, galaxies and other distant objects, weather permitting.

During our August event, Mars will have just made its closest approach to Earth when opposition will have occurred on July 27th. The Red Planet will also be at its brightest since 2003, when Mars made its closest approach in almost 60,000 years. Join the Danville Science Center and the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research as we look back to over 50 years of missions to Mars. Our feature presentation in the Digital dome will be Two Small Pieces of Glass – The Amazing Telescope. During this show you will learn the history of the telescope, from Galileo’s modifications to a child’s spyglass — using two small pieces of glass — to the launch of the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope and the future of astronomy. Have fun with the Mars Rover activity in our lobby, made available through the National Informal STEM Education Network and the Science Museum of Minnesota.

Cost: $5 general admission or free for college students and members
