      EVENT DETAILS
      Coin Collecting Merit Badge 2013

This is for Troop 766 and Crew 2000 Scouts only!

The Coin Collecting Merit Badge will be held on Saturday, June 8th between 2:30-5:30pm.  Cost of for each Scout is $3.  Scouts need to wear their Class A's (tan uniform).  Class size is limited to 20 Scouts.

The Scouts will need to do 2 pre-requisites prior to June 8th:

      1) Scouts will need to bring their coin collection, which needs to include the following:

      • Collect from circulation five different state quarters.
      • Collect from circulation a set of U.S. coins. Include one coin of each denomination (cent, nickel, dime, quarter, half-dollar and dollar). The coins do not need to be from the same year.
      • For each year since the year of your birth, collect a date set of a single type of coin (e.g.; if you were born in 2000, collect a nickel from the years 2000-2012).

      2) Another requirement is to visit a coin shop.  Our MB counselor, Brian Fanton, owns BE's Coin Shoppe (85 N Center Point Rd, Hiawatha, IA 52233), located across the street from the Hiawatha Library.  You can visit the Coin Shoppe on any Saturday between 10:00am-2:00pm, say you're with Troop 766 and would like a brief tour.  Have the owner write your name down and you will get credit for this.  You can go in small groups if you wish.

As I said, Brian Fanton and I will be the Merit Badge counselors.  Brian was on the governor's team to select the Iowa quarter design and was on the panel when the Boy Scouts revised Coin Collecting Merit Badge book and requirements.  Brian is very, very knowledgeable and gives a great class/presentation to the boys.

We do need adult supervision as well, so please sign up if you can.  There is no cost for adults.

      Thanks,

      Dennis
