      Special Screening: "Apollo 11" at 7:30 p.m.

The Varsity is thrilled to screen the 2019 documentary “Apollo 11” at 5 and 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 28. The film premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. “Apollo 11” is a close look at NASA’s Apollo 11 space mission to land on the moon, led by commander Neil Armstrong and pilots Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. The documentary features never-before-seen, large-format film footage from one of humanity’s great accomplishments, which took place in 1969. The film – assembled from a newly discovered archive of 65 mm footage more than 11,000 hours of uncatalogued audio recordings – tells the story of the first moon landing as if it were a Hollywood thriller, as described by QUARTZY.COM. There are no interviews with the subjects, no heavy narration. What you’ll see are only the sounds and images of the occasion, stunning and immediate. “It’s remarkable how well Miller (director Todd Douglas Miller) has adjusted his style here not just to suit this material, but also to evoke the era in which it was originally shot.” “Apollo 11” is rated G and runs 93 minutes. Watch the trailer here: Tickets are $10 and are available in advance here and also will be available at the venue when doors open. Tickets are not available in advance at the venue. Doors and the Varsity Bar open 30 minutes before showtimes. The Varsity is downtown Carbondale at 418 S. Illinois Ave. Go to or to keep up with all upcoming events.
