Workshop: Teaching Kids to Program: A Introductory Workshop for Librarians, Teachers and Parents who aren't Programmers. Programming literacy is fast becoming a non-optional part of learning in the 21st century. These aren't the same skills as "being good with computers" or being gizmo savvy. While not every child will become a programmer, understanding the basic logical building blocks and the conditional thinking required to program a computer is on the main menu for a truly 21st century education. Will DeBock will facilitate this hands-on-workshop and will demonstrate a number of different programming platforms including MIT's Scratch, Carnegie Mellon's Alice, and Codecademy.com.
Hands On. BYOC (Bring your own computer) encouraged, but not necessary.
Presenter Will deBock is a Marlboro College double alumnus. He received his BA from Marlboro College in 1987 and his masters in technology management from Marlboro’s Graduate School in 1998. Since then he worked for Marlboro until 2000, and then started working for Kaplan University. Will has been a faculty member for Kaplan, a Vice President, and the Founder of its Innovations Lab. Currently, Will is a Senior Instructional Designer at Southern New Hampshire University. Will’s personal mission is to empower people through teaching them about the power of easy-to-use, “low threshold” technology. Visit his blog at http://innovationslab.wordpress.com
