      Guns & Pollution The Pros & Cons of Initiatives 1639 & 1631

Bellingham City Club presents the pros and cons of two controversial ballot measures on October 24. Speakers will debate the merits of Initiative 1639 concerning firearms, and Initiative 1631 that addresses pollution. The program follows a delicious lunch shared with fellow community members at Northwood Hall, 3240 Northwest Ave, Bellingham. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. and tickets are available via Brown Paper Tickets and on our website at bellinghamcityclub.org.
If passed, measure 1639 would require increased background checks, training, age limitations, and waiting periods for sales or delivery of semiautomatic assault rifles; criminalize noncompliant storage upon unauthorized use; allow fees; and enact other provisions.
Measure 1631 (if passed) would charge pollution fees on sources of greenhouse gas pollutants and use the revenue to reduce pollution, promote clean energy, and address climate impacts, under oversight of a public board.
Ballots will be mailed October 17, 2018. A stamp will not be needed to return your ballot. This year, the State has agreed to pay postage in an effort to increase voter participation. Ballots must be postmarked by Election Day.
The public is welcome to attend this event, but members are given priority in asking questions. Becoming a member is encouraged.
Bellingham City Club’s mission is to inform, connect, and engage our community to strengthen the civic health of our region.
