Sunset Sessions | The Poetry Market

Four men, four voices, four poets. In a world where it’s easy to just hear from one perspective similar to our own, this community event showcases the importance of unique voices coming together in one space. Youth and elders, personal and globally inspired spoken word, this event will have something that resonates with everyone. Hosted by Alya Howe from the Poetry Market where poems are brought and sold.

      About the Poets:

Madison Coia has been writing poetry for three years. He became aware of his journey during his final year of college, under the guidance of Lauren Beale – a professor of dance at CU. The topic of his work ranges from political and social issues to poetic expressions of the experiences he has had in his life. Namely, battling depression and struggling to find a place in an ever-changing world. Madison has recently moved to Denver and is pursuing his dream of becoming a Hip Hop artist. He is grateful for the continued love and support of his family, and for the opportunity to perform in his hometown.

Cameron Scott was awarded The Blue Light Book Award for his second book of poetry, The Book of Cold Mountain, and was a finalist in last year’s Mark Fischer Poetry Prize for his poem “Mule Deer, White Tailed Deer.” He received an MFA in poetry from University of Arizona and has kicked around the dusty west as a resident/writer-in-residence/teaching artist for Colorado Art Ranch, Chiloquin Visions in Progress, Playa, and Fishtrap, where he currently implements Fishtrap Story Lab, teaching K-12 graders to combine written and visual narratives. In the summers he is a fly fishing guide for Taylor Creek Fly Shop in Basalt. If you have leftovers, he will eat them.

Jose A. Alcantara has worked as a bookseller, mailman, commercial fisherman, baker, carpenter, studio photographer, door-to-door salesman, and math teacher. His poems have appeared, or are forthcoming, in Poetry Daily, The Southern Review, Spillway, Rattle, Beloit Poetry Journal, San Pedro River Review, and 99 Poems for the 99%. Jose has been a two-time finalist in the Mark Fischer Poetry Prize and his poetry has been nominated for both a Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net.
