The Cat That Changed America, Inspiring Documentary Film Starring P-22, the Most Famous Mountain Lion in the World

On Saturday, March 24, 2018, 7-9PM, UNC Asheville and POISON FREE ASHEVILLE will host a screening of The Cat That Changed America, a documentary film starring P-22, the world’s most famous mountain lion, who lives in Griffith Park in Los Angeles where the iconic Hollywood sign is located.

Born in the Santa Monica Mountains, P-22 moved into the park in 2012 crossing eight lanes of freeway on the 101 and 10 lanes on the 405. He is now cut off from others of his species but otherwise thriving in the 8-mile radius park that hosts more than 3-million human visitors a year. However, in 2014, P-22 had to be treated for anticoagulant/rodenticide AKA rat poisoning. Although he recovered after treatment, rodenticide poisoning remains a serious threat to P-22, his mountain lion relatives, and all wildlife.

The Cat That Changed America, an inspiring documentary film about P-22, explores his plight and the development of the wildlife crossing at Liberty Canyon in Los Angeles. Concerned citizens and conservationists are battling to help P-22 and all the mountain lions of the Santa Monica Mountains as they work to raise $60 million dollars to build the wildlife bridge that will connect separated populations of mountain lions. But even after the bridge is completed, mountain lions and other wildlife will continue to face dangers due to the spread of rodenticides and other man-made hazards.

Rodenticides are used throughout WNC. Please come and learn about this serious threat to our wildlife and what you can easily do to prevent avoidable wildlife deaths.

      Special Guests:
Beth Pratt-Bergstrom, California Regional Executive Director for the National Wildlife Federation, internationally recognized P-22 expert and author of When Mountain Lions Are Neighbors: People and Wildlife Working It Out In California

Joel Schulman, PdD, Co-founder of Poison Free Malibu

Bryan Tompkins, Wildlife Biologist, US Fish and Wildlife

The Cat That Changed America documentary is 55 minutes. Optional Q&A after the film will last 30 to 60 minutes.

The film is mostly about P-22's journey through the Santa Monica Mountains and life in Griffith Park and the building of the wildlife crossing at Liberty Canyon. P's unintentional poisoning is not the focus of the film. The focus is P's inspiring journey and life.
