      Artist feature 2014:
      • Steve Winwood
        • For more than four decades, Steve Winwood has remained a primary figure in rock ‘n’ roll, a respected innovator who has helped to create some of the genre’s most celebrated achievements. Winwood burst into prominence in 1963 with the Spencer Davis Group and since that time his celebrated skills as a composer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist have developed an impressive catalog of popular music.
That extraordinary portfolio of music began at the age of fifteen as the driving force of the Spencer Davis Group. The group enjoyed a string of chart success by way of such enduring classics as “Keep On Running” “Gimme Some Lovin’” and “I’m A Man”. The international success of these singles bolstered Winwood’s confidence and strengthened his resolve to seek out new rhythmic possibilities. In 1967, Winwood left the Spencer Davis Group and co-founded Traffic, but Winwood left Traffic in 1969 to join a new group formed by Cream guitarist Eric Clapton and drummer Ginger Baker. The pairing of Winwood with Cream’s Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and later, former Family bassist Rick Grech, created what many critics dubbed rock first supergroup. The international popularity of Blind Faith, the group’s sole album, confirmed their special chemistry. Blind Faith staples such as “Can’t Find My Way Home” continue to rank among Winwood’s finest achievements.
Eventually the 1977’s solo debut Steve Winwood signaled a bold new artistic direction. Such a shift should hardly come as a surprise for those who have followed Winwood’s distinguished career. Beginning with Traffic and extending through such landmark solo albums as the Grammy Award winning Back In The High Life and Roll With It, Winwood has nurtured a restless creative spirit, mining rich musical traditions such as Delta blues, English Folk, R&B, and West African calypso and merging these perse influences within his own unmistakable sound.
Winwood continues to perform throughout the world and record new music, furthering his impressive legacy. In addition to his many achievements as a solo artist, Winwood remains in high demand for special collaborations with other artists. His distinctive Hammond organ has graced such classic fare as Jimi’s Hendrix’s “Voodoo Chile” as well as Miranda Lambert’s recent chart hit “Baggage Claim”.
While rightfully acknowledged for his many achievements, Steve Winwood forges ahead undaunted, continuing to create and perform new and exciting material. He remains one of the most important and influential artists in all of popular music.
      Battle of the Bands 2014:
      • April 4, 2014 — 4 bands will compete in Battle of the Bands
        • Catch the event at the RVA Theater in Richmond, VA, and VOTE for your favorite! For details click here (Keep an eye out for more! There are 3 monthly events throughout the summer, leading to the final event on Saturday, Aug. 9th) Congratulations to the following: People’s Blues of Richmond, Everwilde, The Green Boys, and Bryan Elijah Smith!
        • People’s Blues of Richmond brings a carnival-like mayhem to their dark, blues-infused psychedelia. Their new album, Good Time Suicide, is a study in excess, brimming with ballads of drugs, vice and murder that sonically recall early Led Zeppelin, only weirder and with a modern sheen. Word is starting to spread about the manic intensity of the band’s live performances as they burn up the road in support of Good Time Suicide, sharing bills with a diverse collection of bands-from Ghostland Observatory and Black Joe Lewis to Galactic and Flogging Molly.
        • The Everwilde band performs originals whose sound can be described as pure country, influenced by Southern Rock and Blues. With common interests and solid principles, complimented by a realistic writing approach; Everwilde has developed a unique sound that is quickly becoming identifiable in the industry.
        • The Green Boys are a four-piece band based out of Richmond, Virginia. Equally mislabeled as bluegrass, folk, or honky-tonk, the boys sometimes mention the idea of being a part of a “country-revival”. It’s a half-serious notion that nonetheless approaches the crux of the band’s complex sound.
        • Bryan Elijah Smith & The Wild Hearts are an Alternative-Americana band based out of Dayton, Virginia. Their unique sound defined by their raw energy & Smith’s unabashedly genuine songwriting & voice makes this band one worth not only listening to but experiencing live. Smith has opened for such acts as Nathan Moore, The Barr Brothers, Paul Curreri, Trent Wagler, Fastball, Emmitt-Nershi Band and Corey Smith. Smith has also jammed/performed with Steve Kimock, Zach Gill of ALO & Jack Johnson’s band, Greensky Bluegrass, Zach Deputy, Brock Butler of Perpetual Groove, Jerry Joseph and Trevor Garrod & Reed Mathis of Tea Leaf Green on Jam Cruise 9, 11 & 12. He has written over 500 original songs, released 7 full length albums since October 2009, performed up and down the entire East Coast of America, toured Australia in the Fall of 2013 & has even performed in Roatan Honduras. NASA recently took notice & used ‘Pour On Me’ for their 2013 ‘Water Falls’ movie trailer.
