The Shenandoah Valley Art Center, during the month of August, is exhibiting in the Cabell/Arehart Gallery the paintings of Chad Austin. Austin, an art teacher for over thirty years, has taught Elementary, Middle, High School and adult classes. Currently teaching at The Covenant School in Charlottesville, Austin leads his students in following the Christian Liberal Arts and Sciences tradition of having art connected to all subjects and aspects of learning. His work is displayed in many private collections throughout the United States. This exhibition shows the full breadth of his work over the past four years. In this, he was able to find his own voice and create a body of work that is deeply personal and connected to the great traditions of the past. In his own words: “From its beginnings in the eighteenth century, American painting has been one of realism, tinged with romanticism, whether in storytelling narratives or in landscapes. Nature and art have always held a special place in American art. The nineteenth century Hudson River School painters treated the landscape of the new world as a gift to humanity. Twentieth century artists, such as the regionalists and modernists, sought to reinterpret nature in a bold, expressive manner, capturing a personal response to elements seen and unseen. I have a belief that the natural world is a spiritual one in which one's inner truth is made visible. Georgia O'Keeffe captured the idea by stating, ‘it is only by selection, by elimination, by emphasis, that we get to the real meaning of things’. Landscape painting is my passion and as I continue to work with it, its qualities become more symbolic, mystical, and spiritual to me. Within this I construct a world of tranquility and peace.” The Opening Reception is planned for August 8, 5:00-7:00 p.m. Because of the COVID-19 restrictions, please RSVP to SVAC if you are planning on attending. We will ask you to choose a time slot to help us keep attendance at a safe level. SVAC asks that those coming to the gallery respect the COVID-19 precautions.
In the Members’ Gallery, the theme “BLUE” will be interpreted in a variety of media and creative ideas by SVAC member artists.
