Shenandoah Valley Art Center Exhibit: Member's Anniversary Judged Show

The Shenandoah Valley Art Center, during the month of July, is continuing the exhibition in the Cabell/Arehart Gallery of the Members’ Anniversary Judged Show. All participants exhibit the medium and artwork of their choosing. The exhibition was judged and awards were given by Erin Murray. Originally from Waynesboro, she currently lives in Harrisonburg, Virginia, paints in her home studio, and teaches part-time at JMU. As a National Merit Scholar, she attended the College of William and Mary and earned her BA in Painting and Drawing and completed her MFA in Painting at the University of New Hampshire. Murray was awarded a graduate fellowship to study and teach plein air painting in Italy. After completion of her graduate studies, she taught painting and drawing at the University of New Hampshire, Sanctuary Arts (Eliot, Maine), Carroll Community College (Westminster, MD), Blue Ridge Community College (Weyers Cave, VA), and Larkin Arts (Harrisonburg, VA). Her work has been included in local, regional, and national exhibitions including, most recently, the National Juried Art Exhibitions at Larkin Arts’ Wine-Riner Gallery, Park Gables Gallery, and The National Figurative Drawing & Painting Competition at Lore Degenstein Gallery, at Susquehanna University.
Murray commented about the Members’ Show, “This was a beautiful and diverse collection of works to judge and I enjoyed exploring the textures, colors, and ideas held in each work. Ultimately, I chose the winning pieces based on creativity, mastery of the media, composition, and presentation. I was looking for work that not only showed exceptional craftsmanship but also artistry in composition and unexpected and surprising expression of ideas and emotion. The winning pieces created moments of poetic silence, force, or excitement.” The 2020 Member’s Show Award Winners: 1st Place: Ted Sutherland, 2nd Place: Rose Guterbock, 3rd Place: Julia Lesnichy, Honorable Mentions: Lynn Hilton Conyers, Karen Rosasco, Peg Sheridan, John Chaffe, Sue Rosen.
SVAC is proud that it is a community-based organization that showcases and supports its talented members with this annual exhibition. Because of the COVID-19 restrictions, the awards ceremony will be held at a Closing Ceremony in July with the exact date to-be-announced. The artwork will be on display during July in the gallery and the exhibition will also appear as a virtual exhibit on the SVAC website. SVAC asks that those coming to the gallery respect the COVID-19 precautions.
