McCoy JugHeads - Faces of the hills and stills - Miniature face jugs by Cathy McCoy

"As a Girl Scout Troop Leader attempting to teach clay skills, this tiny face jug appeared in my hands and the nonsense kept forming from there."

      NWG New Window Gallery

New Window Gallery welcomes artist Cathy McCoy of Happy Valley NC. Come and view her many miniatures sculpted from clay!

      Statement from the artist:

McCoy JugHeads started forming in my hands in October 2020 when I first began working with polymer clay. While the troop girls were making the usual clay pots and snakes, a miniature face jug formed in my hands. While twisting and mushing the clay, a funny nose or chin appeared. Adding the rest of the face with some teeth and ears, hats or hair adds to the personality. Each piece is a vessel of some sort, animated with a stereotypical 'hillbilly face' a vase, mug, whiskey barrel and all are signed originals. The spirits of the moonshiners and hillbillies seem to peer out from the jugs just waiting to tell you their tales.

Face jugs and moonshine stills are part of our Appalachian heritage. These miniature McCoy JugHeads range from 2-4" tall and about 1-3" wide. They are suitable for collecting as ornaments or keepsakes. Each is perfectly unique.

      About the artist:

Cathy McCoy is the administrative assistant at the Caldwell Arts Council in Lenoir NC. She never knew she had any artistic talents til she had a child who loved to watch the children's programming on UNC-TV. Once the tot's programs were finished, Donna Dewberry's One-Stroke Painting class started, so Cathy learned to paint and achieved certification as a Level 1 Instructor for that method in 2007.
