The Keys to Unlocking The Code: Improving Reception of Fingerspelling

Presented by Jim Van Manen PhD, CI & CT This is not just another fingerspelling workshop, this is the Superman of Fingerspelling workshops!  This presentation will demonstrate a variety of processes that regularly occur in ASL that native users of ASL know and you might not.  When native users of ASL fingerspell, they don’t use the same set of signs as you do for the alphabet.  They literally have a secret set of signs they use that few people figure out.  During this workshop, we will talk about some linguistic terms needed to understand how these processes work, and then we will dive right in on techniques to help improve your abilities.  If you are struggling with fingerspelling, you will be very happy about this workshop because it’s the missing piece to the puzzle you’ve been looking for.  You don’t understand fingerspelling because you weren’t taught the way Deaf people are actually using it.  Wouldn’t you like to know what you’ve been missing? Jim Van Manen, Ph.D. CI and CT. Jim is an Associate Professor within the ASL Department at Columbia College Chicago. Jim’s research interests include how native ASL users actually fingerspell and how that can be better understood by ASL learners. He is also interested in Deaf Art and how to best teach students to understand ASL via video. Jim has presented internationally on topics including Fingerspelling, Deaf Art, De’VIA, Interpreting Humor, ASL Linguistics, and more.   This workshop will be held from 9am to 4pm with 1 hour for lunch.   Purple Communications is an Approved RID CMP sponsor for continuing education activities.
