      Joyful Living Retreat Weekend

      Join us for an entire weekend devoted to connecting to your inner joy. Hello. My name is Gregg Gonzales, and I am the founder of Joyful Living, an initiative whose main purpose is to provide mindfulness training to enhance and awaken joy and happiness in others. As part of this effort, I would like to introduce you to the Joyful Living Retreat Weekend. I believe that asking the right questions are like “keys” to the doors of your mind, heart, and soul. I will incorporate teaching from my Pillars of Joy Workshop that consist of thoughtful and inquisitive questions to help unlock your inner joy and happiness. This work is heavily influenced by the teachings and philosophies of the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu from the novel, The Book of Joy, where these two men discussed and analyzed what they call the Eight Pillars of Joy - four qualities of the mind (perspective, humility, humor, and acceptance) and four qualities of the heart (forgiveness, gratitude, compassion, and generosity). These two great spiritual leaders agreed upon these characteristics to be lasting qualities to ensure that joy and happiness can be sustained, even the most troubling and challenging times in our lives. As part of this workshop, I have curated and developed questions that relate to each pillar in order to assist in bringing about a deeper understanding and appreciation for each characteristic as well as providing valuable and lasting tools to help you sustain and bring about your own joy and happiness in your life when it is needed. This workshop teaches my participants to understand fully how the Eight Pillars of Joy can provide lasting happiness in an ever-changing world. The goal is to provide clarity and define our “true purpose” in life - avoiding suffering and discovering happiness. It is through this, that I help you explore how we can transform joy from being a temporary state into one that is an enduring trait - from a short-lived feeling into a lasting way of being. The Joyful Living Weekend is designed to: • Assist you in answering pertinent questions which will give you more access to joy and happiness in your life. • Help you realize how much joy you have in your life. • Provide techniques and practices to help maintain and foster your joy. • Show you how to utilize these pillars into your own life to handle day to day stresses and obstacles. • Provide personal insights bringing true joy and happiness to the surface. • Enhance how you can live a life full of joy. • Create a “sacred space” to share your life experiences with others about your thoughts, fears, and feelings. • Provide subtle reminders of the core values that we all strive to live by in our day to day lives but sometimes get lost in our emotional, scary, fast, and loud world. • Help those participating in opening up emotionally and being able to look at life through different lenses and points of view. • Aid in inner healing and discover what was within yourself all along, that joy is present always, even in happy and challenging times. My inquisitive questions, which make up the core of the workshop, are meant to engage, stimulate, and awaken you to the answers that are deep within you - the answers to the questions you may be seeking each day. With as little commentary and analysis as I can provide, my wish is to provide a platform for you to speak - openly, freely, and joyfully. These questions are not meant to be probing, simply a way to shift your perspective, re-discover thoughts, emotions, or feelings that have been suppressed, or simply as a way to release and acknowledge the joy and happiness you carry with you each day. It is truly a remarkable experience and I am deeply passionate about this effort to guide you effectively and authentically. Being able to answer your own life questions is one of the many goals I have for you. During and after the workshop, you will be able to answer for yourself these questions on joy: Is it really possible to be joyful while dealing with our day-to-day troubles - from frustration with morning traffic to fear and worry of not being able to provide for our families, from anger at those who have done us wrong as well as grieving at the loss of those we love, from the suffering of illnesses to the unknown ending of death? How do we accept and embrace the reality of our lives but overcome the pain and suffering that is unavoidable? And even when our lives are good, how do we live in joy when so many others are suffering? When devastating poverty robs peoples of their future, when violence and terror fills our news, and when global ecological devastation endangers the very possibility of life on our planet? The Eight Pillars of Joy will be discussed in length along with questions relating to each pillar to enhance your understanding of the particular characteristic. Each pillar works interchangeably with each other in this way: With a wider PERSPECTIVE, we see our connection to all others. There is a HUMILITY that recognizes our place in the world and acknowledges that at another time we could be the one in need, whether that need is material, emotional, or spiritual. There is a sense of HUMOR and an ability to laugh at ourselves so that we do not take ourselves too seriously. There is an ACCEPTANCE of life, in which we do not force life to be other than what it is. There is a FORGIVENESS of others and a release of what might otherwise have been. There is a GRATITUDE for all that we have been given. Finally, we see others with a deep COMPASSION and a desire to help those who are in need. And from this comes a GENEROSITY that recognizes that helping others is actually helping ourselves. As the Dalai Lama put it, “In fact, taking care of others, helping others, ultimately is the way to discover your own joy and to have a happy life.” The weekend will be hosted at a beautiful traditional southwest home just outside of Santa Fe, NM, the Art House Myers.  The workshop portion of the weekend will begin Friday evening with our friend and chef, Arie Atlas, leading us in finding joy through cooking dinner together.  Saturday, I will share the concept of Shinrin-Yoku (Forest Bathing).  We will then incorporate the concepts in a mindfulness hike through the beautiful area surrounding Santa Fe.  I am joined in presenting this weekend by Shelly Shipley, founder of Nurturing Our Spirit.  Shelly will be leading discussions and exercises that incorporate understandings of how energy flows through our physical, emotional, and energetic bodies.  We will practice grounding and being present in our bodies, finding where our joy resides, and learning to call upon it whenever needed. Gary Myers, a retired art teacher and amazing Santa Fe artist, has graciously agreed to lead us through creating a piece of our own art.  If you think back to your childhood, weren’t some of your most happy moments spent creating?  It truly did not matter whether your painting, drawing, or clay creation was a masterpiece, only that you had fun in the process.  We will explore together how the artistic process of creation can help us tap into our inner joy. You will leave the weekend with a Bundle of Joy starter kit, which includes worksheets, a Joy Journal, sample Joy Questions for you to use with others, as well as various guides and lessons that will enhance and compliment your workshop experience in a continuing effort to bring joy and happiness in your life long after the weekend is over. Furthermore, you will be invited to participate in a private Pillars of Joy Facebook Group which will be a forum for continuing conversation, motivating and inspiring quotes, and previews to new and exciting events that are happening within the Joyful Living community. What is included in the weekend price? 3 nights lodging based on double occupancy, Friday evening dinner, breakfast Saturday and Sunday, lunch  on Saturday, and the entire workshop on Saturday including the art project.  Lodging space is limited so the $275 is for people who are attending with a friend/partner they are willing to share a king, queen, or bunk beds with.  If you would prefer to have an entire room to yourself, the fee is $425. We also have a limited number of spaces available for those wanting to attend the Saturday portion of the workshop for $125 each, which include breakfast, lunch, the workshop, and art project.
