Salem Audubon Birding: Minto Brown Island Park

This will be a SHORT winter walk with the goal of seeing the most birds possible in a mile. Southern neotropical migrants are getting ready for migration here. Indicators on flora for upcoming spring will include buds, catkins and possibly even Fringecup stalks. We will look at hedges, snags, and water for birds. Geese that have had migrated here for winter are in family groups. Dusky and Cackling Geese will eventually leave the valley after fattening up for the flight to their far north natal sites. Duck species will be pairing and winter passerine species will be preparing in the next 4-6 weeks to move. This is a good window of time to enjoy flocks of sparrows, chickadees, nuthatches, wrens, woodpeckers, creepers and to study the behavior of resident birds beside their winter visitors. Dress for the weather and wear appropriate footwear for soft wet paths.

Meet at 9:00 AM in parking lot #3 , the last parking lot in the park. There is a sign showing the trails, and we will quickly review the landscape before heading out. Meet at the signage.

Directions: From River Road S, turn west at the signal at Minto Island Road and proceed to the last parking lot.
