      Fall 2019 SCSU Social Justice Bike Ride

      Join us for Fall 2019 ride through New Haven to learn social justice stories past and present. See your city in a new light! Learn the history and sites of social change that surround you! STARTING LOCATION:  FITCH ST GARAGE, Southern CT State University, New Haven, CT BIKE: Bring your own or use a GREEN BIKE.  There is no cost to borrowing a GREEN BIKE, use of the bicycles has been donated by the GREEN BIKE company. This is a free program for all riders! TIMING:  START TIME IS 6:30 AM We will start promptly at 6:30 am with orientation to discuss bicycle safety and provide an overview of the tour.  Please be on time, especially if you are borrowing a GREEN BIKE bike. We will be biking for 2.5 hours (approximately 6:45 am – 9:45 am) – including lots of stops! Our goal is to be back at the SCSU campus and done with tour by 9:45 am.  WHAT TO BRING: WATER BOTTLE.  If you are borrowing a Green Bike, bring regular size plastic water bottle to fit into bottle holder.  Large Nalgene bottles will not fit. SMALL BACKPACK TO CARRY SUPPLIES. Cell phone: To communicate, if necessary. Small notebook and a pen, if you want to take notes. Sun glasses Small snack – granola bar? HELMET:  All riders must wear a helmet.  If you don’t have a helmet, you can borrow one from us for no charge. CLOTHES:  If possible wear light/bright clothing so everyone can see you.  Wear sneakers or other close-toed shoes.  It is not safe to bike in flip flops. Wear layers if cold, because you wil warm up!  LOGISTICS The route is about 13 miles and 90% flat.  There are no big hills or inclines. Short (3 min) informational briefs to describe each of the tour sites. There are about 12 stops. The tour is organized by 2 SCSU Faculty members: Dr. Joseph Milone, Assistant Professor, Department of Recreation, Tourism, and Sports Management, serves as the tour’s Logistics Coordinator/Bike Expert.  He will carry first aid supplies and flat tire repair kit. He is able to answer any questions related to the equipment and bicycle safety. Dr. Amy Smoyer, Assistant Professor, Department of Social Work, organizes the content of the tour, including itinerary and community information. Weather:  Hopefully, we will get a nice sunny day!  We will follow the weather closely. If thunderstorms or hard rain, event will be cancelled, but this seems unlikely. We will ride in light rain!
