Why Fake News Works (and What We Can and Can't Do About It)

When an event occurs or a fact is uncovered, information travels from the source to the public to the individual.  That information is filtered through governments, journalists, teachers, and others before it reaches you.  Even then, your brain filters that information without you even being aware of it. Join Dr. Joan Delfattore, professor emerita at the University of Delaware and author of three books on controversial speech published by Yale University Press, for a short lecture followed by an interactive discussion of the vulnerabilities in normal human thinking that leave even the most intelligent of us open to being deceived. How, for instance, can two people look at the same evidence and draw opposite conclusions? Why is it so hard to change beliefs once they've taken root? Why can't the law do more to hinder the spread of false information? This program offers an opportunity to become a more savvy critic of news, social media, and advertising. Registration required.  Free event and complimentary snacks.  Beverages available for purchase. This program is part of the "Democracy and the Informed Citizen" initiative.  We thank the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for their generous support of this initiative and the Pulitzer Prizes for their Partnership.
