Racial At(one)ment – Experiential Learning Model

Brothers and Sisters in Christ, due-to a recent surge of hate crimes in America, we extend an invitation to enter into the wilderness Lenten season as a community in need of racial atonement (at-one-ment); the process of being at–one with one another. The larger goal is to improve your church discipleship and enhance community companionship. Therefore, we’re offering a five session experiential learning module on racial conciliation to seek healing in the Greater Lafayette community of racial relationships and to unify the body of Christ. Below you will find the agenda for experiential learning and an opportunity to schedule your five sessions. Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness…So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them” (Genesis 1:26a & 27 - NRSV). INTENTION The sin of white supremacy that shapes our thinking, woven in our nation’s history, and relies on our daily conscious and unconscious reinforcement. Lent 2020 offers our congregations a time of repentance for our participation in sustaining white supremacy, white privilege and systemic racism. Together we will remove comfortable space and put on the sackcloth of: mourning, repentance, complicity and humility. An examination of our conscience, our history, and our current reality will call us to name our silences and bear witness to the pain we don’t want to acknowledge. We will fast from our assumptions, honestly facing our temptations and seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit for ‘truth’ and conciliation. PREPARATIONAn initial meeting with Rev. Rodney Lynch and key church leaders to: Clarify the intent and expectations for Lent 2020. Identify the specific Lenten practice for your congregation that creates a Lenten environment of repentance, fasting, and prayer (c.f. II Chr. 7:14). If and when this land is healed, it will take God’s people. COMMUNAL EXPERIENCE Congregation initiates Lenten practice for the six weeks of Lent. During weeks 1, 3, & 5 the congregation gathers for the following 1 ½ hour experiential learning sessions facilitated by Rev. Rodney Lynch and Barbara Kerkhoff.  To get started with this process, we’re offering a one-day (Saturday) September 28, 2019 session for pastors and their selected leaders. In this preliminary session we will meet and commune with faith leaders of different ethnicities, commit to partnering and grapple with these three questions: Where Are We? How Did We Get Here? Where Do We Go From Here? If you choose to continue the process, after the initial session you will go back to your congregations, prepare them for Lenten 2020 Racial Atonement – Experiential Learning. This one day session cost is $35 that includes continental breakfast & lunch (payable at the door). We look forward to exploring with you how this invitation supports the equity work you and your congregations are already doing. We encourage you to partner with a church or churches of different ethnicities for the purpose of listening to diverse voices. The value in examining this rich experience is immense for racial healing in the Greater Lafayette community. “For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:26-28). To schedule, have questions and/or have any concerns contact: Rev. Rodney Lynch at (973) 879-3733/rlynch@drew.edu or Barbara Kerkhoff (765) 418-3772/bkerkhoff@comcast.net With faith, hope and love,Rev. Rodney Lynch and Barbara Kerkhoff
