Backpack: Black Mountain Range July 6-7

The Black Mountain Range is the highest in the east, with 14 peaks over 6,000 feet, including the highest in the east, 6,684 foot Mt. Mitchell. We'll start the backpack at Mt. Mitchell State Park, which is accessed by road, and from its summit parking lot will hike along Crest Trail to the Big Tom Spur Trail (just before Balsam Cone Mtn.). Then down the Spur a short way to a junction with Trail 191, the Buncombe Horse Trail. From there we'll day hike east on #191 to great views from Maple Camp Bald. We'll then return to the junction and collect water before continuing west on # 191 to a campsite below Mount Craig. On Sunday we'll continue on Trail 191 to Stepps Gap. Total backpacking mileage is around 6.3 miles with 1-2 miles of day hiking. The backpack is rated moderate because of the elevation gain/descent and distance.
