      2019 RNNC Fort Wayne - Regional Neighborhood Network Conference

      The Regional Neighborhood Network Conference (RNNC) is an inspiring three-day event hosted each year by one of 20+ Midwestern cities and 5 States: Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky and Tennessee. It’s a place where volunteers, corporations, governments, and community leaders gather to learn from each other and gain valuable ideas to help transform their own community. It features a wide variety of workshops about state of the art approaches to neighborhood improvement, presentations by experts and leaders in urban and neighborhood development, and lots of fun, food, and entertainment!   The RNNC is a place where community leaders and volunteers gather to exchange information with one another in order to gain valuable ideas to take back and help improve or transform their own communities. Attendees may be representatives of these or other groups from their communities: Nonprofit organizations with a mission to build resilient families and vibrant communities Local units of government (municipal and county) responsible for community development, economic development and planning Financial and investment institutions committed to community reinvestment Allies in philanthropy Real estate developers and agents Social entrepreneurs Public housing authorities Neighborhood and Community leaders and volunteers Mayors, Councilpersons, and Department Heads Please visit our website to view more information such as the event agenda, speakers, workshops, and entertainment as well as maps of the convention center and hotels.  Tours will be held on Friday, September 20th.  Below are the descriptions for each tour.  Please select one during your registration. Brew Tour: Breweries are popping up throughout Fort Wayne and offering neighborhood places for residents to gather and get to know one another. Tour four of the city’s breweries and learn how they are playing a role in neighborhood revitalization.  Must be 21 Play Tour: Come see how local residents Play in the Fort by visiting some of the community’s nationally recognized Parks and Recreation facilities. Visit the new Franklin Park, the site of a former neighborhood school, which accommodates a variety of events such as neighborhood fairs and concerts. From there, see the breathtaking Rose Garden in Lakeside Park, which features over 2,000 varieties of roses. Finally, stop at Taylor’s Dream Boundless Playground, which welcomes children of all abilities, and Kreager Park, where you can learn about the area’s 113 miles of trails. Renew Tour: Visit established neighborhoods in south Fort Wayne to see the Johnnie Mae Farm (urban farm located in a former fire station), Bottle Works Lofts (adaptive re-use of a former Coca-Cola Bottling facility into affordable housing), Vincent Village campus (non-profit transitional housing organization serving formerly homeless residents) and Posterity Scholar House (affordable housing opportunities supporting single parents attending school).  Discover Tour: Take a moment to learn about your family background on this walking tour to the Allen County Public Library’s Genealogy Center. The Center houses one of the largest research collections available, including an extensive collection of 350,000 printed volumes and more than 513,000 items of microfilm and microfiche. Staff specialize in genealogy and are always available to help. Appreciate Tour: Come appreciate a piece of Fort Wayne history as you tour the former General Electric campus, now in the initial phases of redevelopment as Electric Works. Electric Works is a mixed-use district of innovation, energy, and culture, developed as a public/private partnership between RTM Ventures and the City of Fort Wayne. Electric Works includes 39 acres, 18 historic buildings and more than 1.2 million square feet of space for office, retail, residential, hotel, and entertainment uses. Admire Tour: Take a walking tour and admire one of Fort Wayne’s near downtown neighborhoods that is steeped in history. One of the City’s Historic Preservation Planners will be joined by a resident and together they’ll discuss the benefits of a neighborhood being designated as a Local Historic District or being listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Along the way, you’ll see a variety of residential architectural styles, including Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Queen Ann, Prairie, Craftsman and more. Walk Tour: Stroll through downtown Fort Wayne, which is experiencing significant revitalization. See everything from new housing developments to the historic rehabilitation of some of the City’s most iconic buildings. Stop by the new Riverfront Fort Wayne Promenade Park and take a peek into some of downtown’s exciting new restaurants. Work Tour: These two hands-on tours will require you to roll up  your sleeves and get to work improving one of Fort Wayne’s great neighborhoods. Kevin Wright and Joe Nickol, experts in urban design and placemaking, have been working with two local neighborhoods to develop placemaking projects. RNNC attendees will help complete the projects by lending a hand with activities such a painting, building, and landscaping. Along the way, Wright and Nickols will offer advice on how to complete similar placemaking projects in your neighborhood.
