      SW Museum Skills: Using Your Museum to Generate Income

      About the day As the song said “Money makes the world go round” and in the current climate, it is essential for museums to look at new ways of generating income. This day will look at how you can use the facilities and resources of your museum to bring in extra income, using examples from across the South West and the rest of the UK. You will see how museums have taken creative approaches to bring in money.   You will also have a chance to ask questions and share your thoughts on how museums can find new ways to generate income. While the day is not focused on the ethics of income generation, it will look at an overview of the issues and how these can affect the approach museums take. Who should attend? The session is aimed at those in museums, both in paid roles and as volunteers, who are responsible for income generation and who are looking to learn about the range of possibilities available to museums What will you learn? After the session you should Understand the range of income generation possibilities available to museum Feel more confident about exploring new ways of generating income and be inspired to try them out as part of making your museum financially resilient Have an overview of how factors such as Ethics can affect which income generation approaches are appropriate for both the sector and individual museums Have heard examples and case studies of how other museums have generated income How does this session relate to Arts Council England’s Accreditation Standard? 2.1 An approved forward or business plan which covers the current and subsequent planning year  2.2 Financial sustainability  Session leader The session will be led by Jason Finch, Senior Museum Development Officer with South West Museum Development. Jason has a broad experience of museum development in England and Scotland, as well working in and managing a range of museums and heritage organisations in both countries. Through his roles, Jason has gained a strong knowledge and understanding of how museums can develop new ways of generating income to support their activities and ambitions.
