SW Museum Skills: Caring for Archival Collections

About the Day The day will provide information on all aspects of caring for archive collections. We will look at the ways archival materials can be damaged and how to provide a better environment for them. You will have the chance to try out appropriate materials and tools to use with your collection. Safe and simple ways to handle, clean, store and display your archive collection will be included, focusing on books, paper, maps and plans, documents and photographs. There will be a tour of the archive and conservation studio at Dorset History Centre. There will be some practical activities to gain skills to use in your museum. Who should attend? Anyone who cares for archival material in a museum – e.g. books, paper, documents, photographs, maps and plans, ancient charters – and who would like to know more about how to look after this material, to handle it, store it and put it on display safely. What will you learn? From this session you will: Understand more about the storage conditions required by archive materials Learn achievable ways to provide better conditions for your collection Feel more confident to handle and care for archival materials Be able to plan for the archive collection, including improved storage, conservation and display Have an increased knowledge of the facilities at the Dorset History Centre and its Conservation Studio Have gained practical skills to use with your collection How does this session relate to Arts Council England’s Accreditation Standard? An approved collections care and conservation policy  A collections care and conservation plan Session Leader Helena Jaeschke ACR, is an accredited conservator who provides collection care and conservation advice and support to the museums across the southwest.  Her BSc in archaeological conservation provided an excellent foundation for this work since museum collections include a wide range of materials and conservators must know not only how objects are made, but also the ways in which they deteriorate. Helena specialises in finding practical and affordable solutions, and providing training for non-specialists. In her spare time she helps conserve sites and objects in Egypt. Helena is a Fellow of the International Institute for Conservation. Jacqui Halewood is the Principal Archivist at Dorset History Centre. Jacqui manages the public access, preservation, collections care and community engagement team at the Dorset History Centre. Jenny Halling Barnard is the Archive Conservator at Dorset History Centre. Jenny undertakes preventative and remedial conservation at Dorset History Centre and provides advice and treatment for external clients.
