      Type 1 Diabetes & Sports Perhaps you are just starting out with diabetes and exercise? Perhaps you have tried eating more food before exercise but you still went hypo during exercise? Join us at SporT1Day - overcoming the hurdles of type 1 diabetes Join us at SporT1Day; the only diabetes and sports conference that is led by athletes who have type 1 diabetes many of them are or have been professional athletes and some have even represented their country in their chosen sport.  The conference will also offer structured education from Dr Parth Narendran, one of the countries leading expert diabetologists on sport and exercise. Who is hosting the event? The event is run by Chris Bright, founder of The Diabetes Football Community and Paul Coker the founder of  Chris & Paul have lived with Type 1 diabetes for more than 60 years between them.  Chris has is a semi-professional soccer player who also has national caps for Wales for playing Futsal (the official FA version of 5-A-Side football), Paul climbed Kilimanjaro with a team of fellow Type 1's and to celebrate 40 years of living with type 1 he ran 40 half marathons in a year. Who is speaking? Dr Partha Kar - NHS England Lead Diabetes and Technology Dr Parth Narendran - Reader and honorary diabetes consultant (specialising in sports) at Birmingham University - Dr Narendran will be delivering part of the fabulous ExTOD (Exercise and Type One Diabetes course) Brian Hoadley - Marathon Runner, an athlete with type 1 diabetes. From couch to marathon with type 1 diabetes Melanie Stephenson-Gray - Sprinter - capped for wales at 60m & 100m, dietician, an athlete with type 1 diabetes Alex Richards - Psychology, diabetes and sports Craig Stanley - Former professional soccer player and club manager, an athlete with type 1 diabetes Chesca Loggia - Netball Player, Member of the GB start rowing team, an athlete with type 1 diabetes Emma Innes - Diabetes Specialist Nurse Muhammad Ali - Professional Boker, the first athletes with type 1 diabetes to be granted a professional boxing licence in the UK So what?  Everybody benefits from exercise, but for people with diabetes the benefits may be more significant.  Exercise helps us to reduce the risk of developing complications, it helps us to maintain sensitivity to insulin and it helps with the mental health aspects of living with diabetes.  You don't have to be a professional athlete or capped for your country to gain these benefits. Exercising with type 1 diabetes adds additional challenges in managing your blood glucose levels so come along and learn from these experts because success leaves clues. We recommend that children should be aged 12 years and over, young people under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event? There is plenty of parking at the venue. If you are travelling by Rail Worcester Foregate Street is the nearest train station, it is a short taxi or bus ride, or a 10 minute walk What can I bring into the event?
