      Medieval Art, Icons and Egg Tempera Painting

      This art workshop, led by Gill Walton, BA(Hons)  and Prof Maria Chester, will enable you to make a beautiful Icon on gessoed board with gold leaf and homemade egg tempera paints.  After an introductory 30 minute lecture by Maria you will begin with learning how to mix egg tempera paint from pigment and egg yolks. You will then create a beautiful icon of your own from traditional designs using traditional methods and gold leaf (there will be an extra material cost of £12 for this workshop). You will take home a small but exquisite icon on wooden board, a wonderful Christmas present for yourself or a loved one Medieval art is beautiful and beguiling and works made from simple ingredients like pigment and egg yolks still survive today. After learning more about the history of icons from Professor Maria Chester you will be provided with a small gesso primed wooden board applied with gold leaf. You will make your own simple design and apply it to the board then learn how to make your own egg tempera paints from natural pigments and learn how to layer these fast drying paints onto the gold. This workshop is designed to give you a very basic introduction to the processes involved in this wonderful discipline. Materials: you will be provided with a wooden board, gold leaf, pigments and eggs. Please provide your own watercolour brushes and palette. Easels are provided. There will be a 30 minute break for lunch and you can bring a packed lunch or eat in the Granary Café. The cost of the workshop is £42 (including £12 materials fee).
